This is a great question and the answer depends on a lot of factors. Patients who have no drooping of the breasts do not need a breast lift. If there has been a lot of weight loss or a pregnancy – or several! – the breast skin envelope gets stretched out and will sag to some degree.
If the goal is just to lift the breast without making it larger, a breast lift alone works well. The length and location of the scars can change according to how much breast looseness has to be corrected.
Often, the desire is to lift the breasts and make them larger. In that case, the placement of an implant at the same time can work well if the desired implant size allows for enough lift to be done. Not all surgeons are willing to do both of these procedures at the same time, as it can be challenging to get a good result.
If there is only a little sagging, the implant alone may be enough. If there is a moderate amount of sagging, an implant with a lift will help. If there is a great deal of sagging, sometimes it is best to do the procedures in a staged fashion.
