Ask Dr. Pane! “Can Pre-Existing Conditions Affect Plastic Surgery?

Ask Dr. Pane: Can You Have Plastic Surgery with Pre-Existing Medical Conditions?

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is whether pre-existing medical conditions can impact a patient’s ability to undergo plastic surgery. Dr. Pane explains that while it’s a concern, many patients with conditions such as diabetes, heart surgery, or blood clots can still be eligible for surgery, as long as it’s handled correctly.

How We Approach Complex Medical Histories

At our practice, we don’t turn patients away just because they have a history of certain medical issues. Each case is evaluated carefully, with the goal of ensuring patient safety. Dr. Pane and his team will assess details such as whether a condition like diabetes is well-controlled, or if someone who has had blood clots is no longer at significant risk. Certain surgeries, such as eyelid procedures or removing lumps and bumps, carry minimal risk, making them more accessible even for those with a medical history.

Setting Up for Success

Dr. Pane emphasizes the importance of preparation, likening it to athletes who set themselves up for success. For example, a patient with a history of blood clots may no longer be on blood thinners or may have been cleared by their doctor, making the surgery viable. At our practice, we work closely with the patient’s other healthcare providers, ensuring clear communication and comprehensive planning to reduce risk.

Making Adjustments for More Complicated Cases

Some cases require a bit more planning. For example, if a patient has had a pulmonary embolism in the past, Dr. Pane might recommend splitting a longer procedure like a mommy makeover into two shorter surgeries to reduce risk. Patients are always kept informed about these decisions, and their care plan is tailored to ensure the best possible outcome.
